Georgia on My Mind
TRAVEL DAY 19 - Fernandina Beach to Jekyll Island
March 22, 2023
4.37 Hours/30.6 Miles
We are back to those beautiful boating days that make this trip so much fun. What a difference a day makes! When the weather is forecast to be iffy or poor, we stay in a marina.
Today's "daytrip" was to a place we have visited in the past by car. Jekyll Island is one of the barrier islands on Georgia's coast. Developed during the late 19th century and is home to some beautiful cottages. Many of these vacation cottages were built by America's wealthy industrial tycoons, like Goodyear. This is also the place that in 1910 five of the country's leading financiers met secretly to put together what is now the Federal Reserve System.
When we first visited here years ago, there was virtually no commercial activity on the island. That's not the case today as the island has developed with more shops and a gas station which as I recall there were none when we first came here.
We anchored at the mouth of Jekyll Creek across from the Jekyll Harbor Marina. We were the only boat there and it made for a fantastic quiet spot. We dinghied over to the marina and paid the $10 to dock and unload the scooters to explore. We scootered around the beautiful bike trail in and out of the cottages. We even found a Geocache!
At 5:30 pm we met with our friends Ron & Kerri Kitchen. We have known the Kitchen's for years in Crystal River and it was Ron that actually introduced me to Ron & Eva Stob's book "Honey Let's Get A Boat". I have planned to do this trip ever since. We had an OK meal that was very pricey, a little disappointing but the company more than made up for the poor fare.
Back to the boat for a sunset and planning for the next day's "daytrip". They say the Great Loop is just a series of "Daytrips", so far we've had 19.
