Camano 31

Pau Hana is a 2000 31' (It's actually 28') Camano Troll Hull# 121.  The "Troll" was built in Vancouver BC and I have been told about 280 of these boats were produced.  It is styled after the west coast work boats and to us has a sort of tuff little look.  It was designed as a "pocket trawler" built to cruise efficiently and be handled by a small crew of 1 or 2 people. Great for couples or a small family who want to cruise without spending tons of money.

She has a single 200 HP Volvo diesel engine mounted in the center with a fully protected prop.  What is also unique about the Camano Troll (some say kuh-MAHN-noh, others say kuh-MAY-noh) is the Keel form hull designed by Bob Warman, a Vancouver, B.C., naval architect.  The hull gives good stability and a good running angle while providing efficient fuel economy.  It cruises at about 8 knots but can do up to 15 knots (although you lose that fuel sipping ability).  At cruise it uses about 1.9 gph which is about 3.5 mpg.

It has a large saloon with an L-shaped couch that converts to a 2 person berth.  The Galley down has a full size sink, small refrigerator, a 2 burner propane stove and a microwave.

Across from the Galley is the "wet head".  Forward is a large berth that we think is pretty comfortable.

What is pretty neat about the boat is that the Saloon has windows that wrap all the way around giving you a great view whether you are relaxing or driving from the lower helm.

Our boat came with a generator (which was added later by a previous owner) as I believe most did not have it.

Up top there is a flying bridge which is the best place to operate the boat.  It has a lot of room for a small 28' boat with a 10' - 6" beam.

After having a few twin engine boats, I was anxious for the simplicity of a single engine and the reliability of diesel. The learning curve of maneuvering a single engine boat is a little steep, but the bow thruster helps immensely.  The single 200 HP Volvo TAMD41P is a great engine.

We looked at many boats but this one just "fit the bill", was priced right & was perfect to do the Great Loop. In fact, this boat (previously named Spirit of Whitby) is a Loop Veteran.  With our 14'6" bridge height to our dock and some shallow water, the 10'6" bridge clearance (top & antenna down) and the 3'4" draft on the fully protected keel was ideal.

We are the 3rd owner's and the boat came with all of the original paperwork so we had a good idea of what we had.  She needs some TLC, after-all, she is a 21 year old boat.  We will spend the next year getting her ready for some small cruises and the big adventure of America's Great Loop in 2023!

    Stay tuned!
